As time would tell, both classes would make the most of it. The Rams wasted little time in giving the three thousand fans in attendance plenty for which to cheer. Breaking a tackle and racing for the end-zone, William “Speedy” Holder’s 63 yard touchdown run sparked a barrage of Rams scores. With the ball now in their hands, the Xavier offense found out just how tough Fordham’s defense could be. Led by seniors Larry Perna, Carlos Zelaya and Charlie Beale, the Rams defense set the tone of the game, forcing a fumble to set up a one yard touchdown run by senior captain Robbie Krusz. The Rams then went on to show just how balanced their offensive attack was, with Robbie Krusz airing it out on a 67 yard touchdown pass to the elusive Ravi Kantha. Now up 21-0, the Rams defense was ch arged with protecting their lead. They responded with dozens of furious hits leaving Xavier unable to gain any offensive yards. Scoring once more before the half on a “Speedy” Holder 21 yard scamper, the Rams returned to the locker room up 27-0. Returning to the locker room, the Rams were unsure of whether cleats or sneakers would provide better traction, but they knew the next time that they left the field, they would enter history. For the seniors, this was their last shot at their archrivals and for many the last time they would ever get to don the helmet and pads and wear the maroon ing back out onto the field, the team was greeted with a deafening cheer from the Fordham fans, inspiring them to continue their quest for victory. In the third quarter, Xavier staged a comeback. Scoring twice to cut the Ram’s lead to 27-14, the Knights showed that they were one of the many quality teams to come out of the Manhattan school. This was as close as the Rams would allow their rivals to come. Led by senior captains Chris Doherty, Dan Lamonaca and James McIntosh, juniors Matt Goldhagen, Jonathan Williams, and the dominating force that is Steve Kristian, the offense marched down the field. Then, when Ravi Kantha pulled in a 46 yard Robbie Krusz touchdown pass he secured a Fordham victory and the game’s MVP award. At the days end, the words “Once more the old maroon waves on high” echoed throughout the stadium as the team sang in victory. MERRY CHRISTMAS! HAPPY NEW YEAR!
