Prep students and faculty from the Writing for the Media and AP Government classes as well as other classes were present for the event and joined the University students in welcoming Senator McCain to our campus. Many thought there would be a small gathering for the show, but instead there was an immense crowd waiting on line. At 7 PM a huge crowd was present even though the program started at 9PM. The long wait for the show to start was cut short when Mr. Chris Mathews began speaking with the audience before the telecast ; to rouse the crowd for the show. As Senator McCain made his grand entrance the applause was nearly endless and deafening much as it was throughout the whole taping and telecast. In the telecast, Senator McCain made a good showing making his points known on all the issues, even his stint as guest host that weekend on “Saturday Night Live”. Although one may disagree with his opinion on going to war he stood his political ground on all the issues which was refreshing. There was one interruption by a demonstrator during the early part of the show as the Senator discussed Iraq, but the dialogue was respectful and informative and undisturbed except for the long stretches of applause and cheers. Overall it was an educational and informative experience for anyone interested in politics or broadcasting. The crowd was involved and Senator McCain and Mr. Matthews really made the audience take part in the show. On Wednesday October, 16, 2002 the political news show “Hardball with Chris Mathews” came to the Fordham Prep Theater as part of their 2002 College Tour. Special guest for the evening was Arizona Senator John McCain, discussing his views on the situation in Iraq, the sniper shootings and his personal life. After undergoing some changes, the Dramatics Society hopes that this year will help show what drama is really all about. From the Latin room to the stage, we are privileged to have Mr. Eric Groepler as our new producer. With several newcomers, the stage crew is working hard once again to bring plays to life. Led by senior “King Tut’ To, the crew will try capturing scenery to the most specific detail. The first play , Detective Story, was directed by Fr. O’Malley, who encouraged everyone to learn the keys to a successful project. From the Hudson Theatre in 1949 to the Leonard Theater, Sidney Kingsley’s Detective Story brought the feeling of what a true drama can be. Based in a 1940’s New York City precinct, we learned that more than one crisis goes on at a time. Matt LoPresti played the role of Detective McLeod, who goes through problems with almost everything that surrounds him. McLeod attempts to track down the town abortionist, who has also secretly treated McLeod’s wife, played by newcomer Stephanie Palumbo. Along with his best friend Brody, played by James Murphy, McLeod deals with all sorts of dilemmas. Joe Bastone played Arthur who is a lost soul in search of love. Joe did a great job and fitted in perfectly after only having acted in a few plays prior to this. The very entertaining burglars, Lewis (Chris Regan) and Charlie (Alex Cinali) give the play a taste of humor as well as having key roles in the outcome of the story. Other returning actors are seniors Chris Grasso, Jonathan Flores and John Hollwitz. With many seniors involved in the play, this was their most important play. We want to thank all of the members of the play and stage crew who have dedicated their valuable time in making the shows work, and we wish them good luck in the future. Thank you for your support.
